Grass Harp is delighted to have the rare opportunity to present the work of Antony Hall, an artist and furniture maker currently living in rural Sussex, in the south of Britain. His work employs simple geometric designs - which he describes as "functional" - often incorporates pattern, and an acute materiality which simultaneously suggests both an organic formation and an elusive handmade process.
He works between painting and sculpture (often through and as part of a drawing process) and within each practice there remains a tension between the 2d and 3d worlds which he habitually draws on. Diverse influences can be registered, from modernist furniture and Bauhaus pattern to early abstract painting and outsider design yet the overall effect is perhaps nearer to some kind of hand-made museum of natural history, an invented 'natural science' of sorts that champions the simple pleasures of making, collecting and living among selective objects as part of daily life. His small scale sculptures often appear fragile and at the same time embody a certain solidity, sometimes being carved from a single piece of wood, playing with the idea of gravity, image, scale, with a deceptively simple form.

For the exhibition at Grass Harp, Antony will present a selection of all new, small scale sculptures, alongside a special edition box, which refers directly to the making and cataloguing of these items, as well as including an even-smaller version of one sculptural element, like a sample piece or offshoot.
